Basic color wheels and charts

There are a multitude of definitions and theories that cover the subject of color, the effect of color, and combination of colors. So many in fact that we will not cover them all fully here. This website is simply a reference for the many color charts available in different design arenas and hopefully this website will develop into one of the best color chart websites around.

color chart wheel The Color Chart Wheel
The traditional color chart circle of yellow, blue and red is commonly recognised in the world of art and design. Sir Isaac Newton can be credited for developing the first color wheels back in 1666. Many variations and combinations of this concept have been developed by artists, designers and indeed scientists ever since. The validity of the color wheel concept is a subject constantly debated and the question of which colors should be included in the the color chart wheel, i suspect is one that will never be fully answered or understood.

Primary color chart Primary Color Chart Wheel
The three primary (or pigment) colors are the three colors in the chart that cannot be created by mixing any other colors together. The primary colors are red, blue and yellow. All other colors are derived from these three colors.

Secondary color chart Secondary Color Chart Wheel
The secondary color chart wheel comprising of yellow, orange, red, purple, blue, green contains colors formed by mixing together the three primary (or pigment) colors.

Tertiary color chart Tertiary Color Chart Wheel
The tertiary color chart wheel is made up of colors created by mixing a primary (or pigment) color and secondary color together. Tertiary Colors are most commonly given a two word name such as yellow-orange, red-purple, red-orange, blue-green, blue-purple and yellow-green.

A word about color harmony
Color harmony is another subject that is widely debated. Color harmony can be defined as the combination of two or more colors that go well together and is pleasing on the eye. However beauty is in the eye of the beholder and many color charts of color combinations have been dismissed as much as appreciated for that very reason.
